Sword Vocab For Writers

If you're looking to polish up your fight scenes, here are some terms you can consider using. Consider how much knowledge the narrator has on swords. If they're a seasoned swordsman they might be used to using specialised vocabulary. If they're a (classic) farm boy who picked up his first sword, maybe they only know a few basic terms.

Pommel

A counter-weight at the end of a sword’s hilt, used to balance the sword

 

Grip

The handle you hold

 

Guard

Protects your knuckles

 

Hilt

All of a sword except the blade proper

 

Scabbard

A sheath for the blade, typically made of leather or metal.

 

Fuller

Groove running down the side of the blade that’s meant to lighten the weight of the sword

 

Furniture

Any adornments on the scabbard
