Unique Power Magic Ideas

Unique Power Magic Ideas

If you're sick of elemental powers* or 'shadow magic', here are some more unique ideas you can use in your fantasy novel.

Consider giving your magic some rules and limitations. If you don't, it could lead to a loss of stakes since your characters can just magic their way out of any situation. Also consider how your world would be impacted by this type of magic. What would technology look like? (And so on...)

Counter-Magic

This power allows its user to undo or block magic. At face value, this seems like a completely defensive power with no attack potential, but you can get creative with it.

For example, in a world heavily reliant on magic, you could undo somebody's youth spell and have them wither away in front of you. You could also make buildings crumble if they were built using magic.

Dream Theft

Anything this character dreams can be brought back to reality, but only if they can successfully steal it from the dream. This limits characters to things they can feasibly steal (so probably not cities and buildings - although who knows!)

Bad Prophecy

This character only has incorrect visions. While this sounds rubbish, it can be very useful, as whatever they predict is guaranteed not to happen.

Puppet Magic

Magic that involves the use of a puppet. For example, you can make puppets move and do your bidding, or you can link a puppet with a real person and use that puppet to control them.

Music Magic

Music creates specific emotions in people. Musical magic could take that ability to another level, causing people to feel or do things based on the music they hear. Perhaps instruments can even be used as weapons (not in the bash-him-over-the-head-with-a-violin or falling piano way, but rather that certain chords can cause damage, etc.)

Wishes

A character could have the ability to wish anything into reality. However, despite how cleverly they word it, the wish rarely goes as planned so they have to use this power with extreme caution.

Door Magic

Whenever this character opens a door, they can step anywhere in the world, so long as that place also has a door. It's similar to teleportation, but with more limitations.
